Murphy’s Law

I have some very good news: The mental health parity bill passed Congress just a couple of hours ago, and it is predicted that President Bush will sign it into law!

This means that insurance companies are now forced to offer the same coverage and copays for mental health services as they do for physical health.

To quote Mental Health America:

Mental Health America today hailed as “a great civil rights victory” the approval of a mental health parity legislation that will broadly outlaw health insurance discrimination against Americans with mental health and substance-use conditions in employer-sponsored health plans.

The legislation, which recognizes the importance of mental health to overall health, bans employers and insurers from imposing stricter limits on coverage for mental health and substance-use conditions than those set for other health problems.  It will provide parity for 82 million Americans covered by self-insured plans and another 31 million in plans that are subject to state regulation.

It is estimated that roughly 67 percent of adults and 80 percent of children requiring mental health services do not receive help, in large part because of discriminatory insurance practices.

For more information, see Mental Health America’s press release.

Murphy’s Law Strikes Again!

by Mike Nichols on July 8, 2008 · 2 comments

Yesterday a number of people trying to access this site encountered extremely slow loading times and a really, really messed up template.

It seems that my server hosting company was having problems, which they fixed later in the day. However, you may still experience slow loading times until they get the issue entirely resolved.

Murphy’s Law found another correlate: When you start getting increased blog traffic, your template looks like you put the pieces in a hat, shook them up, and threw them at the screen!

Sunday Supplement: Murphy Strikes Again!

by Mike Nichols on June 29, 2008 · 0 comments

Murphy, he of the Law, has been at it again. You know his motto, “Whatever can go wrong will go wrong.” This time he’s struck my blog theme, the bit of software code that determines way the blog appears on the screen.

After a long search, I found a theme called “Seashore” that I was very pleased with. It had a nice appearance, calm and muted, that let the posts be the most prominent thing. The picture was beautiful. It worked really well and did all the things I wanted it to do.

Then disaster struck. Shortly after I wrote yesterday’s post, the theme stopped working. Murphy must have been watching and detected complacency! All of a sudden, only the posts showed on top. The columns that had been on the right were all the way at the bottom! It looked like all the screen elements had been put in a hat, shaken, and thrown at the monitor! Being a neophyte at this sort of thing, I have no idea how to go about fixing it.

Saturday Summary, Murphy’s Law Edition

by Mike Nichols on June 28, 2008 · 2 comments

Well, I’m closing out the first week here at Anxiety, Panic & Health. It’s been a busy time! A week ago this blog didn’t exist and now it does. After more than a year of planning and thought, that makes for a momentous occasion — for me, at least.

Setting up a blog was not as hard as I thought it might be, but not as easy as others have implied. There were so many steps — getting the domain names, setting up hosting services, copying the WordPress software, finding and setting up themes and widgets and plugins, getting the blog to look and act right. Each step has a learning curve all its own. Even though the blog is up and running, I am certain that I’ve only just scratched the surface of what I need to know and do to make it successful.

And Murphy was always there to make new corollaries to his law! It seems that at every step of the way he was gleefully making sure that everything that could go wrong, did. The one that sticks out in my mind the most is the 24 hours when the internet “lost” my blog and I couldn’t get to it at all. All I could do was try to be patient and reassure myself that it would come back.
